In this coursework piece which is based on my chosen theme 'culture'.Culture is a very intriguing topic as it is not only around us but in us, and it is what makes society what it is and who we are. Without culture society would be bland and plain as there would be no individuality, uniqueness or a way of life. This is because culture is what creates all of our different beliefs, ideas and attitudes in life, which groups of people express in many different ways, such as their clothing, food, celebrations, etc. All of these are what creates the individuality and uniqueness within us people of society, and because of this, it allows us to appreciate and learn about other cultures. By learning of other cultures, it teaches us the different way of living that people follow, and how with culture, peace can be obtained. All of these factors have contributed to my research and decision of picking culture as my theme, but I have also chosen it as I am someone who has a mixed background meaning that I have experienced multiple cultures, in which I have seen how their ideas can be incorporated in art, such as their distinctive designs and patterns that are used to symbolise their culture. These designs and patterns link in well with art as the multiple sequences can be used to camouflage certain drawings or paintings or can be used as mark making techniques. In order to reflect the theme of culture in my art piece and to show how art is linked and incorporated into our daily lives, I have drawn and painted bottles overlapping each other around the canvas and I have painted a ring/circle of braids. The main aim of doing so was to show how a mixture and overlapping of objects can result into a new object- creating a new design/art, which also reflects the mark making designs and patterns in different cultures where the fusion of different shapes and objects results in many cultural marks and symbols. My use of vibrant and warm colours- blue, green and orange was inspired by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare who explores cultural identity through his work, which related well to my theme of culture, as we both use our heritage and explore its roots through our artwork. These colours are the main ingredients and makes culture what it is, as these vibrant colours are used on clothing, furniture etc. It gives a bright and positive outlook symbolising what culture is all about- an upbeat and diverse society. With having a West African mixture from my grandmothers side, it meant that I could understand and relate to Shonibare's textile designs and mark making patterns, as it reflects those of the African culture. This impacted my work greatly as the main aspect of choosing an artist as such, was to be able to relate to a personal level where the source of inspiration for their work comes from within their self and their background. A piece of work that caught my attention was Shonibare's 'dressing gown' textile work, where he used multiple patterns in which he repeated them throughout the gown, through repeating one pattern over and over, it created a whole new design similarly to what I done on my art piece. The use of warm and bright colours also stood out to me as the use of similar colours to my art piece-yellow, blue, red, pink and white were used to symbolise the African culture as being cheerful and harmonious. This is what intrigued me about Shonibare, which was his use of his origins/heritage to explore and demonstrate the culture of Africa and how that impacted him as an individual.
